Feb. 26-27, 2011; Miami Florida, Kohl's Fun and Fit as a Family at Jungle Island- We created a true urban oasis- an edible garden in which chef Aria Kagan from the Next Food Network Star taught kids how to eat healthy foods the easy way: "eat your rainbow" every day! A big thank you to all the Urban Oasis Project folks and volunteers who helped! We were able to show people where their food comes from, with edible plants everywhere! We heard comments like "I didn't know that kiwi grows on a vine!" and "Look at the tomatoes, honey! They come from a plant!"..."Mom, I thought tomatoes came from Publix! " People were amazed the the keyhole bed with center composting basket, the cinder block-sided garden bed with beautiful painted designs by our volunteers, and our cute 4' x 4' raised bed with cedar sides. They loved the edible chrysanthemums planted in a salvaged Miami-Dade County recycle bin, and were astounded by the wall of hydroponic towers with all sorts of vegetables growing: eggplants, tomatoes, bok choy, lettuces, herbs, radishes, leeks, and so much more. As a backdrop behind Chef Aria, we made a vertical garden, 3 walls of edible herbs and vegetables, from baby cabbages to French sorrel to edible flowers, herbs, and chile peppers! |
